1. Arc'teryx Gamma MX Hoody Men's

Our rating: 9 / 10

Arc'teryx Gamma MX Hoody Men's

Pros:

  • Excellent combination of warmth, breathability, stretch, and wind protection
  • Good pockets and zippers
  • Great as a layering piece
  • The baffles to warm your core while still allowing your arms to breathe and stay dry
  • Excellent mobility for climbing

Hands down the best softshell we've used, the Gamma MX Hoody gives you everything you want for a weatherproof jacket. Arc'teryx uses Gore Windstopper softshell material to block the wind, a great middle build between a slim racing jacket and thicker hardshell, and icefil fabric on the body for breathability.

It's a great 3-layer softshell for foul weather trekking, snowshoeing, backpacking, and climbing, thanks to a good balance of breathability, wind protection, and warmth. It's not the warmest soft shell out there, but that's actually its best feature when used as part of a layering system. It's an excellent choice for bad weather that requires protection during activities but doesn't require the death grip you get when you put on your hardshell.

As a member of The North Face Extreme Team, RAB has access to some of the most innovative technologies and ideas that are required to make fully functional outdoor gear. This is clearly evident with the R.A.B Microlight Jacket that is full of unique design elements as well as a high-quality water resistant outer mesh that keeps the rain, snow, and wind at a distance.

The R.A.B Microlight Jacket is full of special elements that were designed by the RAB design team. One of the most intriguing elements is an almost invisible but durable waterproof/breathable membrane that is protected by a mesh outer layer and not a traditional PTFE membrane. This gives the jacket a soft-to-the-touch feel while keeping you dry for longer periods of time.

Functionality is an area that RAB is also uncompromising with as you will find plenty of functional elements such as the 5-point utility pocket, scuff-free water-resistant zipper, fleece-lined hand pockets, and subtly reflective details.
